Wolf Burner Ticking With No Flame: What the Click Rules Out
A burner that sparks but never catches is nearly always ignition, gas delivery or a soaked switch — not a control board. Here is what the clicking means and what to check before you call anyone out in Los Angeles.

A burner that sparks but never lights is the most common call this business takes, and it is almost never the thing people fear it is. The clicking is not a fault code and it is not the control board complaining. It is the spark electrode doing exactly what it was built to do — and the fact that you can hear it is useful, because it narrows the problem to a short list.
What the clicking actually is
Every sealed burner on a Wolf cooktop has a small ceramic-clad electrode beside it. Turn the knob and a switch behind the panel tells the spark module to fire that electrode at a few times a second, while the valve lets gas into the burner. Ignition needs three things at the same moment: a spark that reaches the burner, gas at the right pressure, and a clear path for that mixture to travel across the ports.
So a burner that clicks has already proved something important. The switch is closing, the module is firing, and there is power. What has failed is one of the other two conditions — gas is not arriving properly, or the spark is arriving somewhere useless.
The four things that stop a burner catching
In rough order of how often we find them:
- A blocked or flooded burner. Boil-over runs into the ports and dries there, or a pan of oil has coated the burner head. The spark is fine; the fuel cannot get to it evenly.
- A cracked electrode ceramic. The white insulator around the electrode chips, and the spark starts jumping to the nearest piece of grounded metal instead of across the burner gap. You still hear clicking, sometimes louder and more irregular than normal.
- A gas delivery problem. Low manifold pressure, a partly closed shut-off behind the range after a remodel, or an orifice sized for propane on a natural gas supply. The appliance’s own rating plate states the pressure it expects — natural gas is generally around four inches of water column at the manifold — and it is worth reading rather than assuming.
- A wet or sticky knob switch. Cleaning spray, a spilled marinade or a boil-over goes down behind the knob. The contact then reports “on” intermittently, which produces clicking that carries on after the burner is already lit, or stops as soon as you let the knob go.
What you can check safely in ten minutes
Do all of this with the burners off and the cooktop cold.
- Lift the grate, the cap and the burner ring off. Look at the ports around the rim: if they are dark and crusted, brush them and clear each one with a paperclip. Do not enlarge them.
- Look at the electrode tip. It should be a clean metal point in an unbroken white ceramic sleeve. Hairline cracks, brown staining or a crumbling tip all mean it is finished.
- Dry everything. If the burner was flooded, a hair dryer on cool over the burner base and half an hour of patience fixes a surprising number of these on its own.
- Refit the cap square. A cap sitting a millimetre proud lets the flame lift off the ports and the burner will not stay in.
- Now try it. One or two attempts, then stop. Repeated attempts push gas into a kitchen that cannot burn it.
If the burner lights and holds a blue flame, you are done. If it lights yellow and lazy, or roars, or drops out at the low setting, the problem has moved from ignition to gas mixture, which is range repair territory and needs a manometer rather than a paperclip.
When it is the spark module, not the burner
The module is worth suspecting when the symptom is shared. All burners clicking together and none lighting, clicking that will not stop after every burner is lit, or clicking that begins on its own with all the knobs off — those are module and wiring faults, not burner faults. So is a total absence of clicking on every burner at once, which is usually power to the module or the module itself.
A useful test at home: light one burner with a match, carefully, and see whether the flame is normal. A clean flame from a match means gas and ports are fine and the fault is purely on the ignition side. That single observation saves a technician twenty minutes and sometimes changes which part rides out on the van.
Where this gets worse in Los Angeles kitchens
Geography does real work on this fault. In the valley, dust and cooking grease bake onto the electrode and the burner base through a run of hundred-degree days until the spark has to jump through a film to reach anything. Within a mile or two of the water the failure is different: salt air corrodes the electrode caps and the terminal connections, and a burner that lit perfectly last spring simply stops catching first turn. In newer buildings the cause is often neither — it is a shut-off valve behind the range that was never fully opened after the appliance was slid into place.
None of that changes the diagnosis. It changes what we bring, and it changes the advice afterwards: a coastal cooktop wants its terminals sealed rather than merely cleaned, and a valley cooktop wants the burner heads pulled and washed more often than the manual suggests.
When it is worth calling somebody out
Call if you smell gas at any point, if the burner lights with a pop rather than a soft catch, if two or more burners have gone at once, or if the clicking carries on with everything off. Those are not cleaning problems. Call also if you have brushed the ports, dried the burner and refitted the cap and it still will not take — at that point the answer is an electrode, a switch or a pressure reading, and all three need parts or instruments.

What we would rather not do is replace a control board for a burner that needed a brush and a new ceramic, which is why the clicking is worth listening to before anybody starts quoting.

Is it safe to keep trying the burner while it clicks?
Two or three attempts is normal. If it is still clicking after that, turn the knob off and leave it off for a few minutes — every failed attempt is putting unburnt gas into the room, and a pocket of it can light with a thump when the spark finally does connect. If you smell gas at all, shut the appliance off at the valve, open a window and do not use the cooktop until it has been looked at.
One burner clicks and the others are fine. Is that still the spark module?
Usually not. A module drives every electrode from the same circuit, so when it fails you tend to lose all of them or get continuous clicking on all of them. One burner misbehaving on its own points at that burner: its electrode, its ceramic, its ports or the switch behind its knob.
Why does it light first time in winter and not in summer?
Heat and humidity change how well a marginal spark jumps, and a cracked ceramic insulator leaks more current to ground when it is damp. A burner that is fine in January and hopeless in August is usually a cracked electrode rather than anything electronic.
Can I clean the burner ports myself?
Yes, with the burner cold and the knobs off. A stiff brush and a paperclip through the ports is fine; a drill bit or a needle is not, because opening a port oversize changes the flame for good. If the caps look pitted or the electrode tip is white and crumbling, that is a parts job rather than a cleaning job.
